INTREPID adventurers Leisha McKay and Kelly Webster set off from Laurieton last Wednesday afternoon to take part in the 2025 Autumn “Shitbox Rally”.
The rally challenges teams to drive cars worth less than $1,500 across Australia via some of its most formidable roads, serving as a fundraiser for the Cancer Council.
Considered a challenge rather than a race, 225 entered this year’s Autumn rally.
Running for 15 years, the rallies have raised more than $50 million for cancer research and support for patients and their families.
Leisha and Kelly’s rally vehicle is a course veteran, taking part for the third time in 2025.
The inspiration for entering originally came from Kelly’s daughter Ashleigh, who lost her pop Ronnie to cancer.
Asleigh has been in the driver’s seat for the past two years and asked her mum to take over this year.
Kelly accepted and roped in her friend Leisha to join.
“To raise funds for a great cause and to commemorate Ronnie is my main motivation,” Kelly said.
“I am also looking forward to the adventure along with the growing number of women and girls in this year’s rally.”
Leisha told NOTA that lots of her friends and family have been “touched by cancer”.
“This is my chance to do my bit to raise money for this very worthy cause,” she said.
The route takes teams from Canberra to Townsville, with the course expected to take one week.
Conditions along the way are basic, with swags being the main form of accommodation.
Support is however offered along the way, with Leisha and Kelly filling the roles of first aid attendants.
