Wild Koala Day: Meet Tucker the joey

AS A celebration of Wild Koala Day (3 May), meet Tucker, a joey born through Koala Conservation Australia’s (KCA) Wild Koala Breeding Program at Guulabaa – Place of Koala in the Cowarra State Forest.

Tucker is one of seven joeys born in the program’s first season and is already offering a much-needed dose of hope in efforts to rebuild Australia’s koala population.

Just last week, Tucker had his first health screen with the support of his loving mother, and was deemed fit to transition to a new pre-release enclosure, where he’ll room with two other young male joeys.

As the youngest, he is about one kilogram smaller than the other boys.

However, this hasn’t stopped him from asserting his dominance already.

Small but mighty, Tucker is a feisty boy, which will serve him well when released into the wild.

With koala populations continuing to face habitat loss and environmental pressures, programs like KCA’s Wild Koala Breeding Program remain critical to long-term species recovery.
