A GRASSROOTS charity that began with a simple idea in Laurieton is continuing to make a meaningful impact across the Camden Haven, providing practical assistance to local residents experiencing hardship.
The $5 Coffee Charity Fund, established and operated entirely by volunteers, encourages people to donate the cost of one coffee each week.
That small contribution has grown into a significant community effort, with more than $40,000 distributed to support local families and individuals since the initiative began.
The fund has assisted a broad range of people, including families receiving palliative care through Wauchope Palliative Care, young families struggling with unexpected medical expenses, and those facing homelessness by helping secure temporary accommodation.
Volunteers also provide practical assistance with everyday essentials including groceries, fuel, swags and emergency vehicle repairs.
In many cases, this support enables people to return home to family or maintain employment during difficult circumstances.
“Sometimes it’s a tank of fuel or fixing a tyre. But that’s all it takes to get someone back on their feet,” one volunteer explained.
A defining feature of the initiative is its volunteer-run structure.
Organisers say every donation is directed back into the community, with no administrative costs, allowing funds to reach those most in need.
As demand for assistance continues, organisers are encouraging supporters to consider making regular monthly contributions.
Predictable donations, whether $5, $10, $20 or more, help volunteers plan ahead and respond quickly when urgent requests arise.
Community support also extends beyond financial donations.
The charity’s monthly Saturday morning barbecue at Laurieton Warehouse on Ocean Drive continues to attract local supporters, while cash donations are regularly received through the Camden Haven Anglican Church Coffee and Chat program each Monday.
Organisers say the initiative has strengthened community connections, with many residents keen to see how even modest contributions can make a tangible difference to the lives of local people.
While the charity hopes to expand its reach, volunteers say its future success depends on continued community involvement through regular giving, fundraising events and volunteering.
As one volunteer put it, “It’s amazing what a community can do when everyone gives just a little.”
