DEAR News of the Area,
IT was good to get a response from Mr Duesberry to my recent letter about climate change and fossil fuel handouts. In this letter I pointed out that the Federal Government gives $31,000 per minute to overseas fossil fuel companies that are making millions of dollars in profits (Source: Australian Institute). This equates to billions of taxpayer dollars per year.
If the Federal government was concerned about the people of Australia it would use this money to provide free dental care to all Australians, or eliminate homelessness, or put money into renewable energy and bring down the cost of electricity. However, the Government chooses to pander to the fossil fuel industry and hand out obscene amounts of money.
Unfortunately, I have to disagree with Mr Duesbery that there is no correlation between carbon dioxide levels and global temperatures. If you view a graph showing atmospheric CO2 and average global temperature the correlation is obvious. In statistical terms the correlation coefficient is between 0.88 and 0.92 which is a very strong value.
I was very pleased that Mr Duesberry brought up the matter of renewable energy. Market forces will work to eliminate the use of coal and gas for electricity over time. Renewables are cheaper and cleaner.

“Wholesale electricity prices through Australia’s main grid plunged by nearly 50 per cent in the June quarter [2026] amid a surge in renewable energy output to new seasonal highs, a slump in coal output and the lowest amount of gas generation for 23 years.”
