Lens and Laughter the secret to enjoying photography

FOR 20 years, Hastings Photography Group has been combining socialising with encouraging its members to foster a passion for capturing images.

Long-time member John Upton enjoys photographing still-life and landscapes.

For newbies, he recommends forgetting about the technical aspects.

Instead ‘get your eye in’ first, he says.

The group’s 50-plus members meet on each Wednesday at Roto House, followed by a Friday meeting at Bonny Hills Nursery Café.

“We call our meet-ups Lens and Laughter,” Mr Upton said.

“The social aspect is crucial, and we welcome everyone from beginners to experienced photographers.”

While members often start capturing images using their phone, almost invariably they want to take their skills further and get support and advice on purchasing a digital camera.

Photographer and group member Ray Galea is passionate about the therapeutic benefits of photography. He sees it as a blend of science and art.

After retiring from a career that spanned photojournalism and scientific medical photography, he retired to Port Macquarie and looked for things to keep him busy.

“I joined the club and came up with an idea of establishing a regular digital magazine, EYESO100, for the group, which has been very popular,” Mr Galea said.

“The club has helped me to take my photography to a different level.”

Hastings Photography Group runs monthly competitions for members, as well as an annual exhibition designed to show potential members what they could achieve.

This year’s exhibition is at Laurieton United Services Club from 18-20 September from 10am-4pm.
