PORT Macquarie Hastings Council has endorsed the public exhibition of the draft Laurieton Town Centre Master Plan, describing it as an important step forward in shaping the town’s future.
First drafted in 2021, the plan has remained unratified despite its significance as a long-term blueprint for the commercial and civic heart of Laurieton.
Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce President Luke Hadfield told News Of The Area, “the decision to place the draft on public exhibition gives the community a genuine opportunity to engage with a document that will help guide the future direction of the town centre for years to come.”
A key outcome for the Chamber was Council’s decision to extend the exhibition period beyond the standard minimum requirement, with the draft to remain on public display for 45 days and not conclude before 1 June.
Mr Hadfield addressed Council in person during the public forum prior to the meeting, speaking on behalf of several community organisations and stakeholders who had expressed concern that a standard 28-day exhibition period would not provide adequate time for meaningful public review.
He also acknowledged Mayor Adam Roberts for moving the amendment to extend the consultation period, along with Councillors Danielle Maltman, Rachel Sheppard, Chris Kirkman and Nik Lipovac for engaging in consultation leading into the meeting.
“I commend the Mayor for recognising the level of interest this carries within the community and supporting a more practical exhibition timeframe,
That decision gives people a fairer opportunity to engage and reflects the importance of getting community input right.”
The Chamber will now coordinate a community response effort aimed at ensuring residents, businesses and stakeholders are aware of the exhibition process, understand how to participate, and can put forward constructive feedback where necessary.
This will include emphasising the need to engage actively in the formal process rather than limiting discussion to social media commentary.
