Camden Haven students get hands-on experience of SES

IN 1955, Australia experienced one of its most catastrophic natural disasters when severe weather dropped tmore than 200mm of rain in a single day onto catchments that were already heavily saturated .

The unprecedented deluge created an inland sea twice the size of Tasmania.

In economic terms, the structural, agricultural, and infrastructural damages were calculated at between $600 million and $1.3 billion. It saw 25 lives lost, 300 people injured, and 40,000 evacuated.

In the aftermath, the NSW government established the State Emergency Service (SES). Today there are more than 260 SES units across the state, comprising more than 11,000 members.

With 94 per cent of those members participating as volunteers, they play a pivotal role in responding to emergency requests for assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In Camden Haven, they are represented by an enthusiastic unit under the leadership of its Unit Commander, Carolyn Dobson.

Recently, 10 Camden Haven High School students participated in the SES Internship Program, covering leadership, flood rescue, hand tools, first aid, land search, flood water markers and where they are situated.

“The students told us it was very informative and enjoyable,” Dobson said.

“Most weren’t aware that we do this unpaid as we love our community.”

Since the SES commenced the program in 2023, dozens of students have transitioned into full-time volunteer roles within the organisation, including Fait Bell.

“I have gotten so much out of the internship,” she said.

“When I’m older, I’d love to volunteer.

“The volunteers I met are so passionate about their community.”

The program runs over a week from 9am-3pm each day.
