FRANK and Jeanette Deguara are passionate about the area they live in, and love supporting the Camden Haven’s emergency services agencies.
Each year they organise fundraising events at their Laurieton Over 55s Lifestyle Community, with the most recent benefiting the Camden Haven SES.
Registered nurse and Deputy Unit Commander Stephanie McMahon moved to the area two years. Looking for a way to participate in her adopted community, she joined the SES.
“I feel privileged as part of the SES that the community have selected us as a recipient of their fundraising,” she said.
“I love this community. It’s so tight-knit, and everyone looks out for everyone else.”
SES volunteers attended on the day, demonstrating how to use a defibrillator and providing general first-aid advice.
Helping the Deguaras organise the event were site manager Mark Ennor and their neighbours Jill Quirk and Margaret Latham.
Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer cooked in a BBQ trailer loaned by the Tacking Point Lions Club and later enjoyed a steak sandwich.
Wauchope musical duo Susan Ashton and Tom McIliveen entertained the crowd, combining traditional bush poetry with folk music.
A sprinkling of rain didn’t dampen spirits, as village residents socialised and purchased plants, handcrafts and homemade treats.
Mr Deguara expressed his gratitude to local businesses who supported the event through donations.
“We raised $2033.50 for the SES,” he said.
“I’m extremely happy with how it went; this year’s event was even more successful than our last one.”
