Marine Rescue volunteers complete difficult night rescue off Camden Head

VOLUNTEERS from Marine Rescue Camden Haven successfully completed a difficult night rescue over the weekend of 7-8 March.

A distress call was received late Saturday evening from the skipper of a vessel that had experienced steering and mechanical failure off the Mid North Coast.

A Marine Rescue Camden Haven crew was deployed immediately, navigating deteriorating weather and darkness to reach the vessel.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, the sole sailor was located approximately ten nautical miles southeast of Camden Head.

The volunteer crew then established a tow in the rough conditions.

Marine Rescue returned the skipper and vessel to port at Camden Haven, arriving alongside the Laurieton United Services Club wharf at 5am.

Unit representatives said the incident and challenging conditions demonstrated the skill, professionalism, and commitment of local volunteers who remain on standby around the clock to assist boaters offshore and on local waterways.

Marine Rescue Camden Haven is one of the state’s 46 volunteer units.

Collectively, they support more than 71,000 Logged On vessels per year.

The organisation continues to welcome new volunteers and is actively recruiting.

No prior boating or emergency service experience is required, with full accredited training provided.
