FOR the past 25 years, Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church has been a fixture in Lakewood and the wider Camden Haven community.
The church was officially opened on 9 September 2001 by the Bishop of Newcastle and well-known local resident Nancy Dykes.
Rector, the Reverend Geoff Piggott, led the community from 1996-2010 and oversaw the move from Holy Trinity Church in Laurieton to the new premises.
Church members joined together to acquire land with well-laid plans for future growth of the congregation.
Current rector Nathan Killick arrived in Camden Haven with his family 15 years ago.
“One of the great joys of the past 25 years has been seeing children and teenagers grow up through the church and then become leaders themselves
“Today, more than 40 young people regularly gather at Centre Youth on Friday evenings for friendship, fun, food and an opportunity to explore the Christian faith.”
Initially there were two Sunday morning services and a thriving Sunday School. An evening congregation followed, along with Centre Youth on Friday nights for young people from Years 6 to 12.
Playtime began in May 2008 with eight women, nine children and a simple desire to provide a welcoming place for local families.
Eighteen years later it is still going strong, meeting every Monday during school terms, with around 39 children currently involved together with mums, dads, grandparents and carers.
And the connection with the Camden Haven community extends well beyond Sundays.
The Anglican Op Shop helps people in need, and regular social groups provide friendship and connection for those who need it most.
A Spring fair is held every September celebrating the Church’s place in the community, with this year’s 25th anniversary a special milestone.
On Saturday 12 September from 8am to 1pm, the grounds at 2 Mission Terrace, Lakewood will once again come alive for one of the church’s favourite days of the year — with stalls, food, plants, cakes, books, live music and fellowship.
