Significant King’s Birthday Honours for Camden Haven volunteers

THE leading lights of the Camden Haven have shone brightly in the King’s Birthday 2025 Honours.

The area can lay a small claim to the story of mega-star recipient Bazmark “Baz” Anthony Luhrmann, who grew up in Heron’s Creek.

Luhrmann, who attended St Joseph’s Hastings Regional School in the 1970s, then St Paul’s Catholic College, has been awarded the highest honour – Companion of the Order of Australia AC.

The director of “Strictly Ballroom”, “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and the 2022 blockbuster ”Elvis”, was recognised for “eminent service to the arts as a filmmaker, to the theatre, to cultural heritage, and to the development of artistic talent.”

But equally as impressive, are the achievements of those still volunteering locally.

Dr John Drinan (AM)

Dr Drinan’s list of achievements would fill an entire newspaper.

The Bonny Hills resident has been made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) “for significant service to the dairy and agriculture industries, to the environment, and to the community.”

He is a former Principal of the Tocal Agricultural College, chair of numerous animal health committees and member and chair of dairy research and development councils.

He is also an author, Rotarian, Parish councillor, action group member, Landcare volunteer, farmer, and much more.

As a current member of the Bonny Hills Progress Association, Dr Drinan recently helped coordinate its successful Art Prize.

Marjorie Cameron (OAM)

It has been a right royal year for Laurieton’s Marjorie Cameron.

In February she celebrated her 100th birthday, undoubtedly receiving the customary birthday card from King Charles.

Then on Monday, 9 June, when it was the King’s Birthday being celebrated, she was again in the spotlight.

Marjorie was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia “for service to the community of Port Macquarie” – although much of her time is devoted to the Camden Haven.

While one year off being the oldest recipient, “Marj” was recognised for her contribution to the War Widows Social Club, Laurel Club, Torchbearers for Legacy, Camden Haven Community at 3, the Australian War Widows NSW and Camden Haven Anglican Church.

Karen McKay (OAM)

Karen McKay has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to early childhood education.

Mrs McKay spent an incredible 43 years as the Director of St Joseph’s Early Childhood Services in Laurieton, between 1980-2023.

“Throughout her time with us, Karen demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the care, development, and learning of young children,” the service shared.

“Her deep knowledge, leadership, and tireless advocacy for quality early learning left an indelible mark not only on our service, but also on the broader educational community.”

In acknowledging her well-wishers, Ms McKay said she missed her “past life” but now volunteers as “gardener in the dementia wing at my Dad’s aged care facility.”
