BRIAN Roberts emigrated to Australia from the UK as a “Ten Pound Pom” in 1960.
He married at 17 and lived in Sydney for many years before moving to Laurieton Residential Resort in 2016.
After being retrenched at 60, Brian discovered volunteering, a passion that has brought him so much joy and purpose ever since.
“I started volunteering with Vinnies and Linked, and now I help out at Lakeside Aged Care in Laurieton,” he shared.
“My greatest satisfaction comes from chatting with residents who rarely have visitors.
“The rewards go both ways for them and for me.”
Brian is full of energy and community spirit.
He runs trivia sessions at the resort, often alongside his daughter.
“Picture my daughter and me running trivia sessions in our resort,” he said.
“We love seeing everyone involved, having fun, and just enjoying a good laugh together.”
Brian also acts as a visitor at aged care facilities, calling Bingo, chatting with residents, and encouraging them to leave their rooms to join in the fun.
At 85, Brian is proud to show that age is no barrier to helping others.
“In society, you only get out what you put in,” he said.
His approach to life is simple but inspiring: stay active, engage with the community, and keep a positive mindset.
“Keeping an active brain and lifestyle helps keep dementia away… and I’m looking forward to receiving a card from the King on my 100th!”
