Lilli Pilli Ladies donate $116,500 cold cap machines to Mid North Coast Cancer Institute

LILLI Pilli Ladies have strengthened support for local cancer patients by donating two Paxman cold cap machines valued at $116,500 to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute (MNCCI) in Port Macquarie.

The cold cap machines, valued at $116,500, help reduce hair loss in people undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

The machines work by cooling the scalp during chemotherapy, helping to protect hair follicles and reduce hair loss.

While the treatment is most commonly used by women, it is available to all patients receiving suitable chemotherapy treatments.

Breast Cancer Care Nurse Nicole Lindley said the technology offers both physical and emotional benefits for patients facing cancer treatment.

“The cold caps may not prevent all hair loss during chemotherapy but they do protect the hair follicle which can help hair grow back sooner,” Ms Lindley said.

“The machines gradually cool the scalp to between minus three and three degrees.

“The first 10 minutes can be the most uncomfortable, but the scalp soon becomes numb.”

For many patients, retaining some or most of their hair can help maintain confidence and a sense of normality during a difficult period.

Lilli Pilli Ladies President Judy Saul said the donation was the largest the group has made since its formation.

“It is a privilege to support cancer patients in maintaining their hair during treatment,” Ms Saul said.

“Hair loss can be one of the most confronting aspects of chemotherapy.

“Being able to preserve hair helps people feel more like themselves during an incredibly challenging time.”

The donation continues a decade of community fund-raising by the Lilli Pilli Ladies, who will celebrate their 10th anniversary in October.

The group is on track to have raised more than $500,000 for the Mid North Coast Local Health District during that time, helping deliver important equipment and services for local patients.

Their next fundraiser, supporting prostate cancer awareness, will be held at the Gladstone Hotel on 25 July 2026.
