Seahorses brew up fundraising success

MEMBERS of Bonny Hills Lake Cathie Cricket Club pride themselves on being one of the fastest growing clubs on the Mid North Coast.

Eight years ago, they had a single team. This year they fielded more than 15.

Known as the Seahorses, the 250-strong club is run by a passionate group of volunteers who are keen to share their love of the game.

The growth in membership has led to a need for the club to purchase its own cricket nets, which can be shared with the local community. This will require an investment of $100,000.

“If we want to grow the club, we need to have our own nets,” said Anthony McKinlay, the club’s head of sponsorship.

“We’ve applied for several grants but have so far been unsuccessful.”

Six months ago the club devised a fundraising plan that would combine socialising and their love of the area.

In partnership with Bucket Brewery they have developed Seahorse lager and pale ale.

“We were aiming for a fresh, crisp light drink that connected to the area,” Mr McKinlay said.

“We designed the packaging with yellow to represent the beach and blue to represent the ocean.”

The product is being launched at Club Lake Cathie on 1 August at 6.30pm as part of a family fun trivia night.

“We’re excited to introduce Seahorse Lager to Club Lake Cathie,” venue manager Rhys Birrane said. “Created and crafted by the Bonny Hills Lake Cathie Cricket Club – a great initiative to be a part of.

“It’s a locally inspired beer that reflects our coastal community and gives members and visitors another quality option to enjoy.

“The early feedback has been very positive, and we’re delighted to support a product that celebrates the character of our region.”

With an age range of eight years to over 70 years, and three women’s teams, the club is always on the lookout for new players.
