LAKE Cathie FC has taken out the Ladies A-Grade title after defeating the Kempsey Saints in an evenly matched grand final at Dixie Park, Port Macquarie.
“It was a real back-and-forth contest, showcasing talent from both sides; both teams playing an aggressive, attacking brand of football,” said Craig Bulmer, LCFC A Grade Ladies coach.
“Lake Cathie took the lead – in the ninth minute a well-placed corner by Evie Bobilak was calmly finished by Chelsea Hall,” Bulmer said.
Late in the second half, Kempsey equalised, forcing the game to extra time.
“With just four minutes remaining, from a second Evie Bobilak corner, Emilee Franklin stepped up with a cracker of a goal to make it 2–1.
“From there, Lake Cathie kept their composure and defended well to maintain the scoreline until the final whistle.” Bulmer said.
“Full credit to Kempsey Saints coach Luke James and the team. They’ve improved massively throughout the season and yesterday showed just how evenly matched our two teams have become.
“They made us work hard for everything, so to come away with the win is something I am incredibly proud of.”
A feature of the match was the loud and colourful representation on the sidelines from both clubs’ supporters.
Bulmer praised the skill of his established team for keeping their drive and focus throughout the 100 minutes, as well as the support from the younger players who filled in for injured team members and gave their all against tough competition.
“Evie ‘Bob’ Bobilak was named Football Mid North Coast Player of the match and it was well deserved,” Bulmer said.
“She was involved in both goals with two assists, but it was her constant work rate and influence through the middle of the park that really stood out.
“Seeing their faces and the emotion at the final whistle is why you coach. After everything this group has been through together, to see them rewarded with a moment like that was incredibly special. They earned it together and it’s a moment they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”
Peter Briggs, Lake Cathie FC President said it had been a top weekend for football.
“It was a fantastic weekend for Lake Cathie FC, hosting grand finals at home on both Friday night and throughout Saturday at our Rainbow Beach fields,” Briggs said.
“The win by the A Grade Ladies team on Sunday was a great way to end the season for the club,
“I am so happy for the team – not only for their hard work and dedication, but also for being great role models to our younger players.”
