The Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce has successfully trialled a new community initiative, with its inaugural Community Connection Day attracting strong support from both local organisations and residents.
Held at Laurieton United Services Club, the free event brought together 45 local clubs, charities, sporting groups, service organisations and special interest groups, creating an opportunity for them to showcase what they do, connect with one another, and welcome new members from across the community.
The concept was developed by Chamber executive committee members Chan Ansell, Treasurer Amy Vandenhurk and Acting Secretary Rachael Thorpe, who recognised the value of creating a single event where community organisations and residents could come together.
Mrs Thorpe said the idea had come together in just six weeks and she was thrilled by the response.
“I came up with the idea about six weeks ago and feel privileged to be part of an organisation that is prepared to try new things,” she said.
“We had a great mix of hobby and sporting groups, charities and service organisations.
“The feedback from both exhibitors and visitors has been extremely positive, and at this stage we certainly hope to run it again next year.”
With Camden Haven continuing to attract retirees and families seeking a coastal lifestyle, the event also highlighted the importance of helping newcomers establish social connections.
Relocating to a new community often means leaving behind established networks of friends, clubs and volunteer organisations, making events such as Community Connection Day an important way to discover opportunities to get involved.
While supporting local businesses remains the Chamber’s primary focus, initiatives such as Community Connection Day reflect the important role that strong communities play in creating a thriving local economy.
Community groups, sporting clubs, charities and volunteer organisations help make Camden Haven an attractive place to live, work and visit, while also providing valuable support networks for residents.
By helping people connect with these organisations, the Chamber hopes to strengthen the social fabric of the region, recognising that vibrant communities and successful local businesses often go hand in hand.
Among those attending was newcomer Faye Kennedy, who moved to the area in April.
“I came down to the event and found exactly what I wanted, UHA, a wonderful group of crafty ladies, and the opportunity to volunteer with Aussie Battlers,” she said.
“I loved attending and found everyone to be so friendly.”
The Chamber believes the success of the event demonstrates the strength and diversity of Camden Haven’s volunteer and community sector, with dozens of organisations represented under one roof.
Following the positive response, the Chamber is now exploring ways to further support local community groups, including the creation of a dedicated community directory on its website, visitcamdenhaven.com.au, making it easier for residents and visitors alike to discover clubs, volunteer opportunities and community organisations throughout the region.
With strong feedback from exhibitors and attendees alike, Community Connection Day appears set to become an annual fixture on the Camden Haven calendar, further strengthening the connections that make the region such a welcoming place to call home.
