CAMDEN Haven Concert Band offered the perfect way to while away an hour in the Spring-like sunshine for patrons at Laurieton Markets on Sunday, 30 August.
Established in 1995, the band was incorporated in 2002 to include the Camden Haven Concert Band and Laurieton Voices Choir.
With ages ranging from 10 to over 90, the band encourages school students and people of all ages to continue their musical development.
Many former youth band members have gone on to successful careers in the music industry.
Musical director Iain Pole is the longest-serving band member, having joined in 1996.
“You don’t have to be professional,” he said.
“I was a flute player, but there were too many flutes in those days so I said I’ll play the French Horn.”
The band’s musical director for 20 years, Mr Pole said the band has a real community feel, with family members and friends playing together.
“We started as an extension of St Joseph’s Catholic School Band so that students could play in a town band,” he said.
The band recently received a grant from Kendall Community Op Shop for a travel drum kit and bags to transport large percussion instruments.
“It makes it so much easier to get to events and saves damage to equipment,” band member Cherie Pauling said.
Their annual concert ‘Poseidon’s Playlist’ will be held at Laurieton United Services Club on Sunday, 27 September when the band and choir will perform songs with a water theme.
There will also be performances for Laurieton Lakeside residents later this month and at the Camden Haven Show on Sunday, 25 October.
Increasing insurance costs are the biggest issue for the band: the most recent quote was more than $4000.
Raffles and fundraising at events help to cover those costs.
A true community organisation, the band welcomes new members of all abilities and skill levels.
Thursday nights are for learners and those not yet ready to perform, while Monday nights are for band rehearsal from 6.30pm.
