IN A world where kindness can sometimes feel in short supply, two remarkable women in Port Macquarie are proving just how powerful grassroots community support can be.
Better known as The 2 Mums, Julie Bowes and Sherrill Weidenbohm have become familiar faces around town for their unwavering generosity and a commitment to helping others in need.
What started as a simple idea to raise funds for neighbours facing hardship has blossomed into a community-wide movement.
Every six weeks, residents can find these tireless volunteers near Woolworths at Settlement City, where they run cake stalls featuring homemade treats that bring a sweet touch to fundraising efforts.
Their work is supported locally by the Woolworths store manager, a breast cancer survivor, who helps make these stalls possible.
Fundraising doesn’t stop at cakes.
With the support of St Thomas Church, The 2 Mums host raffles and special events, most notably a Trivia Night that was a huge success in bringing people together for a great cause.
These events aren’t just about raising money but also celebrating community spirit and shared purpose.
Over the years, The 2 Mums have supported a range of local charities and individuals in need.
Their efforts include fundraising for the Breast Cancer Society, supporting people living with stage 4 cancer so they can make lasting memories with their loved ones, and delivering practical support to those who need it most.
One of their proudest achievements came last year when their largest fundraiser – a combined effort of stalls, raffles, and community events – raised $10,000 for the Oncology Department at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
This generous donation will directly improve services and support for local cancer patients.
This year, The 2 Mums continued their mission, raising $1,000 for a 12-month-old boy who has faced significant health challenges – a testament to their unwavering dedication to helping families facing tough times.
But these incredible outcomes wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community.
The 2 Mums are always seeking donations – especially vouchers and prizes – for their raffles, as well as volunteers and visitors to support their cake stalls and events.
Whether it’s a delicious slice of cake, a winning raffle ticket, or a table full of trivia buffs, every contribution makes a meaningful difference for local families in need.
