DEAR News Of The Area,
LAST week I was driving along Pacific Drive near Shelly Beach at the speed limit of 50kph.
Suddenly an e-bike, ridden by a teenager, passed me on the inside at a speed I estimate of at least 60kph and shot off up the hill south.
I emailed Rob Dwyer about this and asked what will be done. I’ve had no reply so far except the automatic one. Coincidentally I just received Rob’s August email, which mentions several other local stories but nothing re e-bikes.
This is an issue needing urgent attention.
Surely the e-bikes need to be treated as motor bikes, cars, trucks etc in that they should be registered (displaying a number), have insurance to cover pedestrians and other vehicles/passengers, (i.e. face the same liabilities I would as a car driver), and riders should also be licensed.
I am sure other readers have had similar encounters, so let’s hope something gets to the NSW Minns Labor Government and action is taken.
Regards,
Bruce Heath,
Port Macquarie.
