Port Macquarie’s Town Beach suffers in winter surf

DURING recent weeks large swells and severe weather took their toll on Town Beach in Port Macquarie.

Sand eroded from the beach, leaving steps and drops of one and two metres in places.

The erosion was so pronounced along the section leading to the breakwall that barriers were erected as a precaution and the foot ramp was closed off.

A representative for Port Macquarie Hastings Council acknowledged that erosion had occurred around the Town Beach, beach access and seawall areas, and that concerns were being addressed.

“The works focused on the most impacted section of the dune and beach access while we continue planning for longer-term coastal protection measures,” the representative said.

The stepped beachfront sand was smoothed out to create an easy gradient from which swimmers could enter the surf.

Council is also making the most of quieter winter days to undertake work at Town Beach Car Park.

“Work is underway at Town Beach car park to improve access for all visitors,” the representative said.

“This involves re-lining existing parking spaces and creating two additional accessible parking spaces, which will help more people access Town Beach and nearby facilities.”

Council noted that line marking would take place this week, necessitating a partial closure of the carpark.

“A new compliant kerb ramp will also be constructed in July to further improve accessibility,” the representative said.
