THE Camden Haven Orchid Society is holding its annual Summer Show this weekend, Saturday and Sunday 10-11 January, in the Anzac Room of the Laurieton United Services Club (LUSC).
This is the season for the blooming of Cattleya, Oncidium, Vanda, Dendrobium and Stanhopea orchids.
Stanhopea Orchids in particular contain about 60 species, originating from between Mexico and Brazil.
Society Secretary John Matthews writes that the flower spikes grow straight down and should not be grown in pots.
Wire baskets with fibre lining are used instead, while a slab is another alternative.
The plants should be grown under bright light with humid conditions.
Various other hybrids and species of orchids with Australian and South American heritage will be on display, as will Bromeliads and foliage plants.
A sales table will be available, as will notes for the cultivation of orchids commonly found between the coast and this region’s hinterland.
The Orchid Show will be open to the public on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday from 9.30am to 3pm.
Potting demonstrations will be held at 10.30am on both days and there will be a presentation of awards on Sunday at 2.30pm.
